Background & history

Three switched on in 2003 with a single obsession — selling mobile data harder and cheaper than the established players — and it has never really changed course. Since June 2025 it has been one half of VodafoneThree, the merger that created the UK's biggest network by customer numbers. Both brands still trade separately while the two mast estates are gradually knitted together, backed by a multi-billion-pound upgrade promise aimed at Three's weakest postcodes.

Launched2003
OwnerVodafoneThree (since June 2025)
Hosts on its mastsSMARTY and iD Mobile — same signal, lower prices
3G switch-offCompleted 2024 — turn 4G Calling on for voice
ReputationFast 5G and cheap data; weaker deep indoors and in remote countryside
Watch out: Cold callers claiming your plan must be 'migrated' because of the merger are fraudsters. Existing plans continue unchanged, and genuine changes always arrive in writing.

Plans & pricing structure

The shelf covers every commitment length. What matters is matching the shape to your situation:

1-month rollingSlightly dearer per month, cancel anytime — the right choice until coverage is proven at your address
12/24-month contractsCheaper in exchange for commitment; leaving early costs a disclosed amount, itemised automatically in the PAC reply text
Pay as you goNo credit check, no commitment — spare phones, kids, coverage trials
Unlimited dataThree's speciality — consistently the cheapest unlimited among the four mast owners
Data add-onsOne-off boosts bought in the app beat permanently upgrading for a single heavy month
Multi-SIM discountsExtra SIMs on one account cost less per line
Pro tip: Set the free spend cap the day your SIM activates, and size your plan from three months of real usage in the app — most people use about half what they guess.

eSIM support

Watch out: eSIM transfers are free through official channels. Any 'transfer service' or 'activation fee' is a scam — no exceptions.

Home broadband

Three's broadband is mobile signal in a box: a 4G/5G router posted to you, live the day it arrives. No engineer, no digging, no landline.

Pro tip: Order within the returns window, then stress-test through a full week of evenings — streaming, calls, everything. Keep it if it passes; return it free if it fails.

Roaming & data policy

UK handset useUnlimited genuinely means unlimited on the phone itself
Tethering/hotspotSome plan generations cap it even on unlimited — read this clause if you work from a laptop
EuropeMost newer plans charge a daily fee; some older plans kept inclusive EU roaming — your plan's start date decides, and the app's roaming screen confirms
WorldwideZoned daily rates and passes — check the zone list before flying
Fair use abroadA ceiling applies everywhere overseas, then per-GB charges — nothing is unlimited past the border

Fees, charges & the app

Monthly priceJudge the figure that applies after any intro discount ends
Upfront vs monthlyA see-saw — only the total over the full term compares honestly
Mid-contract risesMust be disclosed in pounds and pence before you sign (rule since January 2025)
Early exitCharged only inside a fixed term; the exact figure arrives itemised in the PAC reply
Out of contractThe most expensive months in mobile — diary your end date and re-shop yearly

The Three app

One app handles allowances, bills, spend caps, add-ons, roaming switches, eSIM issue and support chat. Its most valuable feature is fraud defence: genuine offers appear inside your account — so any caller describing a deal the app can't see has already exposed themselves. Install from official stores only.

Common faults & solutions

Sudden dead zone for hoursMast maintenance — check the status page with your postcode before changing any setting
Full bars but nothing loadsCongestion (stations, stadiums, 5–7pm) — physics, not your phone
Older phone can't make calls3G is gone (2024) — switch on 4G Calling or replace the handset
One room always deadThick walls — Wi-Fi Calling is the cure
Brief odd behaviourMerger-era mast work — planned engineering shows on the status page
Wi-Fi Calling on— calls ride your broadband, walls stop mattering.
4G Calling on— essential post-3G.
Airplane mode, 10 seconds— forces a fresh mast connection.
Update the phone— carrier settings fix odd faults.
Move a metre— a window changes everything.
Then check the status page— if it's the mast, only waiting helps.

Strengths & weaknesses

Strengths
  • 5G speeds at or near the top of independent tests
  • Cheapest unlimited data of the big four
  • Home broadband with zero installation
  • Merger investment targeting its weak spots
  • SMARTY and iD offer the same masts for less
Weaknesses
  • Deep-indoor and rural coverage still trails
  • Most newer plans charge daily fees in Europe
  • Router broadband depends entirely on your local mast
  • Merger transition may cause temporary quirks

How to join / leave

Check coverage first— Three's checker plus Ofcom's, weighting indoor results; then trial one rolling month (SMARTY works — same masts).
Join— order SIM or eSIM online; keep your old number by texting PAC to 65075 from the old SIM and giving the code to Three.
Leave— text PAC to 65075 from your Three SIM; the reply itemises any exit costs; hand the code to the new network. Free, valid 30 days.
If a complaint stalls— eight weeks unresolved (or a deadlock letter) opens the free Communications Ombudsman, whose ruling binds Three but never you.
